Society
This week, Sant Just Desvern has launched a new police mediation service aimed at facilitating the resolution of conflicts through dialogue. The initiative by the Local Police offers a voluntary and confidential process to address neighborhood, community, family or school disputes, with the support of a mediator who helps the parties involved reach mutually agreed-upon solutions. The service strengthens the preventive role of the police and seeks to improve coexistence in the municipality.
Security
In the area of security, two recent operations by the Local Police resulted in arrests related to property crimes. In one case, officers arrested a woman for attempted theft using the method known as “la mimosa”, often used to steal valuables by taking advantage of physical proximity to the victim. In another intervention, the municipal license plate recognition system identified a vehicle linked to a violent crime committed in Esplugues de Llobregat, leading to another arrest.
Environment
The week also included several environmental developments. The City Council carried out the felling of several pine trees in Parc del Mil·lenari for safety reasons after trees fell during recent windy conditions. In total, 22 trees were affected, in a context marked by prolonged drought and a pest that had weakened the pine grove. At the same time, 32 plots in the municipal allotment gardens on Passeig de la Muntanya were allocated through a public draw prioritizing groups such as unemployed people, retirees, young people, local organizations and social projects. In addition, it was announced that the Camp Roig feral cat colony has been closed after more than twenty years of management, thanks to volunteer work and the application of the CER method (capture, sterilization and return) to control the population of community cats.
Culture
Cultural activity has been particularly busy. The bookstore Cal Llibreter and the Ateneu Literary Club are organizing a tribute event for writers Irene Pujadas and Silvana Vogt, winners of the 2025 Finestres Narrative Prize in Catalan and Spanish. The week also brought the announcement of the family screening of ‘Yuku and the Himalayan Flower’ as part of the CineXic program at the Sala del Cinquantenari, an initiative to bring Catalan-language cinema to young audiences. In addition, the Ateneu will host a charity concert by pianist David Expósito, part of the traveling ‘Expo’ cycle, which aims to raise funds for childhood cancer research at Sant Joan de Déu Hospital.
The cultural agenda also includes several other initiatives. Arteneu has launched the first Arteneu Painting Competition, open to participants aged 12 and over, with the selected works to be exhibited during the Ateneu’s Festa Major. The Audience School has organized a theater outing to the Teatre Lliure in Gràcia to watch the play ‘Una festa a Roma’, followed by a discussion session in Sant Just. The Centre d’Estudis Santjustencs has started a new edition of the Santjustenc Knowledge Course, this year focused on the municipality’s natural heritage. The AUGGE has also scheduled a lecture titled ‘The Geopolitics of Space’, delivered by science communicator Joan Anton Català. Finally, the music series Estones de Clàssica returns to the Ateneu with a concert by the Trio Galea, reviving the atmosphere of nineteenth-century musical salons with a repertoire for two flutes and a piano.
Education
In the educational field, it has been announced that Sant Just Desvern will host the new Vivid Spanish language immersion program, aimed at young people aged 14 to 18 from the United States and the United Kingdom. The project combines Spanish language classes with living with local families and cultural activities in Barcelona and the surrounding metropolitan area. It was also announced that the educational music project La Clika will expand into animation with a new cartoon series that will broaden the narrative and educational universe of this initiative already present in several local schools.
Urban planning
This week it was also reported that the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona has approved the second initial approval of the Metropolitan Urban Master Plan (PDUM), the document that will define the territorial development of the metropolitan area until 2050. The plan establishes criteria for urban growth, the preservation of natural areas, infrastructure and mobility, and can be consulted through an interactive cartographic viewer that allows users to explore metropolitan territorial planning.
Economy
In the economic and business sphere, the local economic promotion department has organized training on how to create a virtual artificial intelligence assistant to manage social media. The course, aimed at self-employed professionals and small businesses, teaches participants how to use AI to create content, automate posts and analyse results to improve their digital presence.
Health
In terms of health and well-being, Sant Just is preparing the 14th Popular Walk to mark World Physical Activity Day, scheduled for 9 April starting from the Sant Just Primary Care Centre (CAP). The event will include several healthy routes and activities such as a zumba class and community activities aimed at promoting physical exercise among residents.
Tourism
The municipality has also featured in regional tourism promotion with a new edition of the TRAM Route, an initiative that combines heritage, gastronomy and sustainable mobility. Among the activities linked to Sant Just are visits to the air-raid shelter and the remains of the Molí Fariner, as well as gastronomic discounts at local establishments, with the aim of strengthening local tourism in the Baix Llobregat area.
Politics
Finally, the political agenda has been marked by a report in the newspaper El Punt Avui dedicated to Sant Just Desvern within the “Observatori Municipal” section, including interviews with Mayor Joan Basagañas and opposition leader Laia Flotats, discussing several projects and future challenges for the municipality. At the same time, Junts Sant Just spokesperson Ramon Figuerola analyzed current local political issues in an interview with Ràdio Desvern, addressing topics such as housing policy, the modification of the Metropolitan General Plan and the management of the African swine fever emergency.
