Society
In Sant Just Desvern, La Nit de Sant Just al Carrer has been postponed until October 31 due to the forecast of rain. The event, originally scheduled for October 17 and held separately this year from the Sant Just al Carrer festival on October 25, will retain its food, shopping and cultural activities in the town centre.
Meanwhile, October 31 is the deadline to apply for municipal grants for extracurricular and educational support activities. Families can submit their applications in person at the Citizen Service Office or online.
This week also saw the passing of Josep Maria Marquès Heid, aged 90. He was president of the Ateneu de Sant Just from 2003 to 2012 and a member of the Orfeó Enric Morera choir.
Politics and housing
The Municipal Council has given final approval to the regulations for allocating publicly managed social rental housing. Mayor Joan Basagañas told Ràdio Desvern that new housing developments will prioritise young people and single-parent families. Jovenívols and the second Mil·lenari development are the most advanced projects, and the mayor stressed the importance of registering on the official waiting list for subsidised housing (HPO). Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Just Fosalva highlighted the consensus reached at September's council meeting and defended expanding the public rental housing stock, with more than 250 subsidised homes planned for the coming years.
Economy
Unemployment in Sant Just fell by 3.6% in September, with 19 fewer unemployed residents than in August. The municipality now has 510 unemployed people and an unemployment rate of 5.1%, below the Baix Llobregat average of 7.5%.
Environment
The Town Council has scheduled maintenance work on the wildfire prevention buffer zone to begin on October 16. The work will involve clearing vegetation along a 25-metre-wide strip surrounding the urban area.
The council has also announced a new pest control and prevention campaign for late October and early November, with interventions in public spaces throughout the municipality.
Mobility
Sant Just will host the 17th Mobility Conference organised by Barcelona Provincial Council on November 4. The event will take place at the Ateneu and focus on the design of urban intersections. It will also include a guided tour showcasing local mobility improvements. Pre-registration is now open.
Health
To mark World Mental Health Day, psychiatrist Josep Maria Llobet took part in an interview on Ràdio Desvern, where he warned about the impact of screen use and emphasised the importance of personal relationships and family support.
Culture
In cultural news, 14-year-old Sant Just photographer Jana Colet has won the Youth category of the 17th Catalan Photography League. The youngest member of the Agrupació Fotogràfica Sant Just photography association will receive her award on October 18.
The same association has announced a digital photography course running from November 10 to December 1, taught by Joan Elias at the La Vagoneta Civic Centre. An information session will be held on November 3.
On October 18, the Ateneu will host the children's theatre production Around the World in Less Than Eighty Days by the Sgratta theatre company, based on the story of journalist Nellie Bly.
Guided visits to the Les Escoles air-raid shelter have also been scheduled for October 17, allowing visitors to discover its seven murals and five preserved sculptures.
In the visual arts, Clara Vidal is presenting her exhibition Rastres at the Celler de Can Ginestar until November 12. The exhibition explores the creative process through paintings and installations.
The SEAS association has also organised a lecture on livestock migration routes and transhumance, delivered by Joan Rovira on October 16 at the Ateneu.
Finally, the University Extension Programme for Older Adults (AUGGE) scheduled a lecture by journalist Albert Elfa on journalism in the new world disorder for October 15 at the La Mallola residential centre in Esplugues.
