Politics

The week was marked by the January ordinary municipal council meeting, at which Sant Just Desvern Town Council approved a modification of the 2026 budget, adjustments to local tax by-laws, changes to the remuneration of elected officials, and updates to the financial allocations for municipal political groups. A revision of the by-law regulating the opening of businesses was also approved. Regarding motions, the council passed proposals on the creation of a social and nighttime leisure space, solidarity with the Venezuelan people, and the revitalization of children’s play areas and family leisure spaces in public parks.

Ahead of the session, the agenda had been outlined, and in political commentary, ERC Sant Just spokesperson Désirée Triler criticized on Ràdio Desvern what she described as the lack of a clear direction on the part of the municipal government, as well as the handling of issues such as the waste collection tax.

Transport

The metropolitan public bike-sharing service AMBici has consolidated its growth in Sant Just Desvern, with more than two million trips in 2025 and a significant increase in registered users. The positive balance includes the expansion of stations and bicycles, extended service hours, and the introduction of flexible subscription options. A further expansion of the service is planned for 2026 as part of the municipality’s commitment to sustainable mobility.

Sports

Can Melich Sports Club has entered a new phase with the British multinational David Lloyd Clubs taking over the management of the facility. The operation aims to ensure the continuity and modernization of this historic racket sports club in Sant Just Desvern, with planned improvements and extensions to the facilities and a professionalized management model that preserves its local roots.

Culture

Culture has played a prominent role this week through several initiatives. Writer Pau Guilabert presented his literary project, the ‘Bruma’ trilogy, on Ràdio Desvern, where he spoke about the difficulties of finding a publisher in a saturated market and his decision to use social media to build a reading community. The Biblioteca Joan Margarit reported on a strong 2025, with more than 41,000 visits, sustained cultural activity and close ties with the educational community. The launch of a Pla Local de Lectura to strengthen reading habits in the municipality was also announced.

In the visual arts, the celler de Can Ginestar opened the exhibition year with ‘Paisatges imaginats’ by Àngel Martínez, while the Espai Carme Malaret hosted an artistic action addressing the right to housing. In addition, CineBaix held a new edition of La Mostra de cinema asiàtic, and Sant Just-based writer Pablo Wessling presented his novel ‘Amore’.

Within the calendar of memory and human rights, Sant Just once again took part in the Encesa de Torres, Talaies i Talaiots de la Mediterrània, which this year changed the location of the gathering and the reading of the manifesto to improve visibility, while keeping the lighting of flares at the church bell tower.

Society

On the social front, concern was raised by the second act of vandalism against the human rights mural at the football field, in a context marked by the appearance of racist graffiti around the municipality. These acts have been condemned and reported by the Town Council. The participation of older adults from the Centre Social El Mil·lenari in the maintenance of the jardí de plantes remeieres was also highlighted, as part of a Service-Learning project that promotes participation and well-being.

In addition, the upcoming ‘Envelliment satisfactori’ conference organized by AUGGE was announced, along with an event commemorating the victims of the Holocaust, combining literature and historical memory.

Health

In the area of health, the Generalitat de Catalunya has taken a step forward by launching the tender process to expand the CAP de Sant Just Desvern, a key project aimed at adapting the facility to the municipality’s population growth.

Public safety

At the metropolitan level, a large-scale police operation under the pla Kanpai targeting repeat offenders resulted in 71 arrests, involving individuals with more than 300 prior convictions, as well as dozens of people under investigation. The operation deployed hundreds of officers across several municipalities and strategic locations.

Education

The Servei Local de Català and the Voluntariat per la Llengua program have launched express conversation sessions in Sant Just Desvern, featuring three-minute conversation rounds to encourage oral practice and promote participation in the program, with prior registration and the support of local organizations.
