Sant Just Weekly News Summary

Culture

The week has been marked by an intense cultural agenda in Sant Just Desvern. Registration has now opened for the summer programme of the Cultural Facilities Network, which includes workshops, guided tours, lectures, exhibitions, and heritage visits. The screening of the documentary GEN has also been announced as part of the Docs del Mes series. The film explores in vitro fertilisation and gender affirmation processes. The University Extension Programme for Senior Citizens concluded the academic year with the lecture The Voices of Opera, while the Ateneu Theatre Factory has opened auditions for a Catalan-language production of High School Musical, aimed at young people aged 13 to 24. Preparations are also underway for the traditional summer festivities, with the Sant Joan Midsummer Celebration at Maragall Park and the Sant Pere Celebration at Les Basses de Sant Pere, featuring community dinners, live music, and DJ sessions.

Society

Sant Joan celebrations will also take place in the Mas Lluí neighborhood, where the Residents' Association is organizing a community dinner. Before the festivities begin, the Canigó Flame will once again arrive in the municipality, carried by local runners, keeping alive one of Catalonia's most cherished traditions. Meanwhile, the Youth Centre will host Pride Day with a festive programme including family zumba, music, breakfast, and awareness-raising activities promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Environment

The Town Council continues to strengthen the municipality's green spaces with the planting of around one hundred new trees and a range of gardening projects across the town, particularly in the Mas Lluí and Els Miralls neighborhoods. At the same time, the Collserola Natural Park has activated its special wildfire prevention plan, which will remain in place throughout the summer.

Youth

The Youth Centre has opened registration for the 2026 Summer Programme for young people aged 12 to 18. The initiative combines courses, free activities, and trips to theme parks and water parks, allowing participants to create their own personalized summer programme.

Education

The Adult Education Centre will open pre-registration for the next academic year from 19 to 29 June, offering courses in English, Spanish, and computer skills. In addition, the Barcelona Provincial Council and the Town Council are launching a new edition of first aid workshops aimed at professionals working with children.

Economy

Two major stories have dominated the local economy this week. A new grant scheme has been launched to help businesses remove asbestos roofing, with subsidies of up to €30,000 available. Meanwhile, May's employment figures confirm that unemployment continues to decline in Sant Just Desvern, which maintains one of the lowest unemployment rates in the Baix Llobregat region.

Tourism

The Baix Llobregat Tourism Consortium and the Catalan Government Railways have launched the campaign Discover Baix Llobregat! Ferrocarrils Takes You There, promoting the region's main cultural, natural, and gastronomic attractions along the Llobregat–Anoia railway line.

Public Safety

The week was also marked by a fire at the Ateneu restaurant. Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, and no injuries or structural damage were reported. The damage was limited exclusively to the affected area.

Sports

On 2 July, CEM La Bonaigua will host an awards ceremony recognizing the season's most outstanding athletes and sports teams. The initiative aims to celebrate both sporting achievements and the values promoted through sport.

Politics

Local politics has been dominated by interviews broadcast on Ràdio Desvern. Mayor Joan Basagañas announced his intention to seek re-election in the 2027 municipal elections and reviewed the main agreements approved at the latest council meeting. This week, Ràdio Desvern also interviewed Raquel Delriu, deputy leader of Junts per Sant Just, to discuss the municipality's current political affairs.
