Environment
The week has been marked by the spread of African swine fever following the detection of a new case in a wild boar in Sant Just Desvern, which has forced authorities to expand control measures in the Baix Llobregat area. With 21 new positive wild boars confirmed, the outbreak now totals 216 infected animals and has led Sant Just and Esplugues de Llobregat to be included in the high-risk zone established by the Catalan government. In total, 18 municipalities are affected by the restrictions, which prohibit access to natural areas in order to prevent the virus from spreading, while the eradication plan continues with additional resources deployed. At the same time, the municipality has also stood out for environmental initiatives such as the collection of used clothing through Solidança/Roba Amiga containers, which has made it possible to collect nearly 87,000 kilograms of textiles and avoid the emission of more than 718,000 kilograms of CO₂, while also generating job placement opportunities. The nest box monitoring project at Parc del Mil·lenari has also been consolidated, with third-grade students from Escola Canigó taking part in citizen science activities to study bird species and promote local biodiversity. In addition, a creative sewing workshop at La Vagoneta has encouraged the reuse of clothing and more sustainable consumption.
Mobility and transport
This week also brought announcements related to sustainable mobility and public transport improvements. On the one hand, Sant Just has installed a new Bicibox module in the Les Basses de Sant Pere neighborhood, with capacity for 14 bicycles, reinforcing secure bicycle parking and facilitating intermodality with bus and tram services around Rambla Sant Just–Carretera Reial. On the other hand, the Mas Lluí neighborhood will improve its nighttime connection with Barcelona through the extension of the NitBus N12 route, a long-standing request from residents that will provide a closer and more direct service without affecting current frequencies.
Housing and urban planning
In the field of urban planning, the municipal council has approved an amendment to the Metropolitan General Plan (PGM) aimed at facilitating the creation of more housing without expanding the municipality. The reform will increase residential density, allow the subdivision of single-family homes on certain plots, and promote protected housing, while also safeguarding the municipality’s main commercial axes. At the same time, two public information sessions have been announced at Casal Popular La Sala to promote a cooperative housing project under a right-of-use model in Sant Just. The meetings, scheduled for 12 and 24 March, will explain how the model works and explore the creation of a collective initiative in the municipality. From a heritage perspective, the passage from Carrer Església to Parc de Can Freixes has also reopened after months of renovation work at the farmhouse. The works strengthened the building’s structure and uncovered historical elements, including the base of an 18th-century wine press, which is expected to be integrated into a future museum project.
Society
Several social initiatives have also shaped local news this week. The City Council has launched a new benefits simulator on the Santjust.cat website, allowing residents to easily check which social services and benefits they are entitled to, including programs such as “60 i més”, dependency care, family support, and housing-related resources. At the regional level, a report by the Baix Llobregat County Observatory and the Women’s Council confirms that gender inequalities in the labor market persist, with higher levels of precarious employment, greater reliance on part-time work, and 59% of unemployment affecting women, alongside significant wage and pension gaps. In the context of International Women’s Day, the association Dona i Empresa has also presented its program of activities, including the repainting of the feminist mural in Plaça Camoapa, self-care workshops and initiatives aimed at highlighting female talent in the municipality.
Culture
Culture has also played a prominent role with the presentation of the book “Vull vestir com tu” by Sant Just journalist Bet Coll-Vinent, an essay reflecting on identity and the contradictions of contemporary fashion. The municipality has also launched a new edition of Primavera Literària, which until 24 April will host more than twenty cultural activities, including reading clubs, poetry recitals, writing workshops and family events, culminating in the Sant Jordi celebrations. Among other cultural activities, the Centre Social El Mil·lenari will host a lecture on the Mauthausen concentration camp by Juli Ochoa, while the University Extension Classroom for Older Adults is organizing a talk on how a disaster was prevented at the Vandellòs nuclear power plant. In addition, the Ateneu de Sant Just is launching the Festivalet Folk, a day featuring concerts and a traditional calçotada on 8 March, while the Casal de Joves has presented the Mostra d’Aeris Jr, where students showcase the aerial arts techniques learned during the course.
Commerce
The opening of the new churros stand in Sant Just Desvern, located at the junction of Rambla and Carrer Creu, has become a small social phenomenon in the municipality. Since its inauguration on 13 February, the establishment, managed by Sandra, a professional with more than 35 years of experience, has received a warm welcome from local residents, who celebrate the return of this traditional product without having to travel to neighboring towns.
