This week, Sant Just Desvern launched new initiatives to promote the use of Catalan in local businesses, including language practice programs, free advisory services and initiatives aimed at bars and restaurants. The municipality also kept its urban pest control program active, carrying out actions against rodents, mosquitoes, cockroaches and wasps in public spaces and facilities. In terms of safety, the local police incorporated new patrol vehicles to strengthen operational resources, while civil protection activated the INUNCAT pre-alert due to the risk of intense storms in the Baix Llobregat area, with special recommendations to avoid flood-prone areas in the municipality.
Education
The City Council presented a new cycle of shared education talks aimed at families, featuring sessions on bullying, school-family relationships and respectful boundaries. At the same time, schools in Sant Just were affected by the education strike held on 12 and 13 May, called to demand better working conditions and more resources for public education. It was also announced that a group of local young people will participate in the DESLIMITA’M social theatre showcase, which brings together youth groups from different municipalities in the metropolitan area.
Youth
Sant Just has launched the Summerfest, a new youth activities program running until September with proposals such as themed parties, a pool party and sports activities across different neighborhoods of the town. The project aims to provide local leisure alternatives and involve young people in organizing the activities.
Culture
Culture played a major role this week with the announcement of the 20th Gegants Gathering, which will fill the town’s streets on 6 June with a parade and traditional giant figures dance. The exhibition ‘Intimate Dystopias’, by artist Pepe Jiménez Espejo, was also presented at El Celler de Can Ginestar, including guided tours. AUGGE scheduled the lecture ‘Japan, from the Middle Ages to 1926’, delivered by University of Barcelona professor José Manuel Rua. In addition, the Ateneu de Sant Just announced its Festa Major celebrations from 29 to 31 May with cultural, musical and artistic activities. In the audiovisual field, the local company Mare Meva took part in the 3CAT talent show ‘Ben parit’.
Sports
The Hoquei Sant Just club defended its sporting project despite the men’s first team being relegated to the OK Lliga Plata, and is already preparing for next season with the goal of returning to the top division. The club also celebrated the junior team’s Copa Elit title. Meanwhile, Club Bàsquet Sant Just announced the activity ‘Encistella al poble’ as part of its 70th anniversary celebrations, placing commemorative basketball hoops around the town. A new inclusive sports day at La Bonaigua was also announced, involving students from the local secondary school and the Centre Pilot.
Politics
The week was also marked by political developments ahead of the 2027 local elections. Junts Sant Just re-elected Ramon Figuerola as its mayoral candidate, while ERC Sant Just selected Desirée Triler as the party’s lead candidate. Figuerola also appeared on Ràdio Desvern to discuss current local issues such as electric scooter regulations, public safety and the new protocol against sexual harassment within the City Council.
Economy and commerce
Sant Just Desvern remains the municipality with the highest household disposable income in Baix Llobregat, with more than €33,000 per inhabitant according to the latest data from the Regional Observatory. At the same time, the ‘Sense anar més lluny’ campaign continues expanding actions to support local commerce, with more than one hundred participating businesses and new activities organized in commercial areas during the Sant Jordi celebrations.
Mobility and health
The new regulations on electric scooters will require Personal Mobility Vehicles to be officially registered in order to circulate starting in 2026. Finally, the El Mil·lenari Social Centre scheduled a new ‘Laughter Yoga’ workshop aimed at promoting physical and emotional wellbeing among older adults through breathing exercises, humor and adapted movement.
