Transport

The week was marked by the serious crisis affecting Rodalies de Catalunya following the fatal derailment of a train in Gelida, which led to a complete shutdown of the service for two days. On Thursday, trains did not run due to drivers’ refusal to work without safety guarantees, while the Government activated reinforced alternative transport and opened an information inquiry into Renfe. On Friday, January 23, service was restored on all lines, but with a gradual recovery, widespread delays, reduced frequencies, and occasional incidents. The Minister of Territory, Sílvia Paneque, emphasized the need to restore users’ confidence and confirmed the continuation of exceptional measures such as reinforced bus services, the suspension of the Low Emission Zone (ZBE), and the lifting of the C-32 toll.

Culture

The cultural agenda has been particularly active. Sant Just Desvern is already preparing Carnival 2026, which will kick off with a youth party at the Casal de Joves on February 7 and will culminate on February 14 with the Parade and the Costume Contest, following a route between Parc Sagrera and Parc Maragall. Tickets have also gone on sale for Matilda, the Musical, which will return to the Ateneu on February 7 and 8 after having sold out previously. The Ateneu will also host the Mas Gospel concert (February 1) and the musical show Com sonaria en català by Àuria Franch (January 25).

The week also included a conference by AUGGE dedicated to Mercè Rodoreda, given by Jordi Nopca, and activities for young audiences such as the Fudgel Fest at the Casal de Joves. At the regional level, the cultural sector has mourned the death of Xavier Bachs, president and director of CineBaix, a key figure in independent cinema in the Baix Llobregat.

Education

In the educational sphere, this weekend is the last chance to use the municipal study rooms, which will end their special service on January 25 at the Joan Margarit Library and the Soledat Sans Serafini Civic Centre, following the exam period.

Meanwhile, students and teaching staff from IFP Antoni Algueró shared their experience on Ràdio Desvern about the “24 Hours of Innovation” challenge, a hackathon involving hundreds of students from across Catalonia. The Sant Just team won the challenge set by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat with a communication project based on artificial intelligence, highlighting teamwork, time pressure, and the value of working on real business challenges. The center also reminded the public of its participation in the 'Ocell de Foc' program, aimed at young people aged 16 to 30.

Society

The week provided relevant data on safety and social activity. The Metropolitan Area Victimization Survey reveals that one in four residents suffered a crime in 2024, with an increase in cybercrime, although the perception of safety remains stable. In the associative sphere, the SEAS children’s group has organized a family outing to Tossal Gros (January 25), while the Sant Just Seniors’ Association is preparing a cultural and gastronomic trip to Santes Creus (January 29), including a guided tour and a calçotada.

Economy

Data from Idescat place Sant Just Desvern among the municipalities with the highest growth in employed population in the Baix Llobregat, with an increase of 23.5%, and a GDP per capita well above the Catalan average.

Health

In the healthcare field, the Moisès Broggi and Bellvitge hospitals have created Catalonia’s first Territorial Unit for Peritoneal Oncological Surgery, strengthening specialized care for patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis.

Politics

Finally, local politics took center stage with interviews with Just Fosalva, spokesperson for Sant Just en Comú, and Mayor Joan Basagañas, who addressed the waste tax and the decision not to settle the variable portion for 2025 due to data errors, defending the correction as a necessary measure to ensure tax fairness.
