Sant Just Weekly News Summary

Education

Throughout the week, education news has been marked by the March 20 education strike, which has directly affected schools and high schools in Sant Just Desvern operating under minimum services. The mobilization, led by several trade unions, follows a week of territorial protests and a strong rejection (95%) of the agreement with the Department of Education. The strike has also involved administrative and service staff as well as students, culminating in a joint demonstration in Barcelona.

Environment

In this area, attention is drawn to the slight increase in municipal energy consumption in 2025, which reached 5.4 million kWh, a 4% rise compared to 2024, although still 19% below 2005 levels. The main sources of consumption are public lighting and the CEM La Bonaigua sports facility, and difficulties in meeting the 2030 reduction targets have been identified. At the same time, the municipality has increased its photovoltaic energy production, exceeding 387,000 kWh generated. A second solar charging station in Mas Lluí has also been launched, allowing up to four electric vehicles to charge and promoting shared self-consumption. In addition, the workshop ‘Clear as water!’ has been scheduled to raise awareness about efficient water management.

Youth

Youth activities have included an information session on an exchange program in Denmark, aimed at young people aged 14 to 17, with a stay planned for August. An aerial arts intensive course has also been announced at the Youth Centre, targeting participants with prior experience and focusing on artistic expression through aerial techniques.

Culture

The cultural agenda has been diverse, featuring a joint exhibition by Josep Morral and Marta Pruna at Can Ginestar, focused on the relationship between matter, nature, and origins. A new exhibition by Carrau Blau, showcasing children’s artwork, has also been announced, along with the lecture ‘Ukraine, the war from within’ by journalist Lluís Caelles. Additionally, World Poetry Day was celebrated with multilingual readings at Ràdio Desvern, and the documentary ‘Broll, a land opened in channels’ has been scheduled, addressing climate emergency and territory. In literature, local author David Cordero has presented his novel Gossos, which explores the limits of human behavior.

Urban planning

In this field, the comprehensive upgrade of Carrer de la Riera has been completed, including a new sewer system, underground electrical lines, and improvements in mobility and road safety. A participatory process has also been launched to renovate the playground at Parc Iulia Quieta, involving local children directly in the design of the space.

Society

The week has also featured initiatives such as the ‘die…talks’ series, which brought together women entrepreneurs to share experiences and promote local female talent.

Sports

In sports, a new cycling training project for children has been introduced, with activities at the Baix Llobregat Cycling Park and open days. The Just Urban Trail, a new urban race scheduled for May and adapted to restrictions in Collserola, has also been announced.

Politics

At the municipal level, Mayor Joan Basagañas has defended measures to address the housing issue, including the subdivision of homes, reduction of minimum dwelling sizes, and conversion of commercial premises into public housing, aiming to improve access to housing without relying solely on new urban developments.

Economy

Unemployment data show that Sant Just recorded 483 unemployed people in February, with a 4.9% rate, one of the lowest in the region, despite a slight monthly increase.

Health

Finally, the workshop ‘Sleep better’ has been scheduled at El Mil·lenari, aimed at older adults, offering strategies for rest, relaxation, and healthy habits.
