Sant Just Weekly News Summary

Society

The week has brought several stories linked to community life in Sant Just. The town is already preparing for the National Day of Catalonia, which will be marked by two official events: on 10 September at Can Ginestar, local residents and organizations will receive municipal recognition, while on 11 September, Parc de Pau Casals will host the traditional floral tribute, sardana dancing and a performance by the Orfeó Enric Morera.

The projects set to receive €10,000 in international cooperation funding from the municipal budget have also been announced. Residents selected initiatives in Gaza, Cuba and Lebanon, aimed at improving access to water, strengthening healthcare services and responding to food emergencies. Each project will receive €3,333.

Housing

The Town Council has awarded the contract for the construction of 16 social housing units in La Bonaigua, in the Els Garrofers area. The development will include two- and three-bedroom homes ranging from 55 to 66 square meters.

Education

The 2026-2027 school year will officially begin on 8 September in Sant Just, with nearly 1,900 children and young people enrolled. However, the first day will be marked by an education strike called across Catalonia by unions including USTEC, CGT and La Intersindical.

The Local Catalan Language Service is opening enrollment this September for the new academic year, with courses ranging from A1 to C2, as well as conversation and reading groups. Meanwhile, Carrau Blau will hold open days at La Vagoneta on 9 and 10 September, featuring a range of workshops.

At the Institut de Sant Just, Marta Jansana is taking over as headteacher, with the aim of strengthening communication with families and maintaining the school’s academic standards.

Sports

The La Bonaigua Municipal Sports Complex has reopened its indoor swimming pools following the technical shutdown in August. A number of improvements have also been carried out over the summer, including the replacement of the flooring on the upper sports court, new fencing on the lower court and the launch of a cooling system for the upper court.

On Sunday, Sant Just will pay tribute to Òscar Hurtado Rodríguez with an official ceremony at the Municipal Football Ground, where a sculpture by Concepció Bori and Josefina Abellán will be unveiled. The program will also include the 3rd Òscar Hurtado Memorial Tournament.

Culture

Sant Just’s cultural program is also returning in full swing. The Ateneu de Sant Just has launched a creative drawing workshop led by Imma Boronat, open to all levels and focused on helping participants develop their own artistic style. The Terrasses Musicals programme also returns this September and October, bringing acoustic concerts to a number of bars and restaurants across the town.

Looking ahead, on 3 October the Casal de Joves will host the third edition of Oktoberfest, featuring German food, live music, activities and games for all ages. The Ateneu has also unveiled an expanded autumn season, with theatre taking centre stage, alongside productions such as Una estona amb Joan Pera, as well as music, cinema, talks and the traditional Els Pastorets to close the year.

Environment and mobility

Households that practice home composting have until 30 September to apply for a 100% reduction on the variable component of the waste collection fee, provided they meet the required conditions.

Finally, Sant Just continues to expand its cycling network with improvements to cycle lanes in Mas Lluí, La Bonaigua and Santa Teresa. The works come amid record levels of bicycle use and continued growth in the AMBici bike-sharing service, which will add two new stations in Can Candeler and the Sud-Camoapa neighborhood.
